Another Ukrainian busker plays at Toronto subway station

Allow me to introduce this week’s busker, seasoned violinist Ruslan Nebesov, whom I met on the northbound Bloor-Yonge platform. Ruslan himself is stoic and calm, but tutelage at a prestigious Ukrainian music school and decades of musical discipline have given his playing an obvious shine.

First of all, tell me a bit about yourself. Who is Ruslan Nebesov?
I’m a musician. I started to play the violin when I was 6 years old at the School of Stolyarsky, a school in Odessa, Ukraine for gifted musicians. I especially like to play the piano and the violin.
What is your musical genre?
Mostly classical, but I can play jazz, traditional, some gypsy…everything, almost.
Ruslan also plays in a band called Jumple

Happy to report Nadine Demko of the ’Peg (Sisler High School) was awarded a TD Scholarship for Community Leadership in Ottawa on April 29 for her outstanding commitment to help others.

“Nadine is active in her Ukrainian community as a member of a dance ensemble and as the youth leader of her Ukrainian Scouting Group, Plast. She is also a children’s counsellor in Plast and is a Ukrainian dance instructor. She will be representing the Ukrainian Pavilion as a Youth Ambassador this year during Folklorama.

“As well, she volunteers at Holy Family Nursing Home and plans to pursue a career in medical sciences. She will be among other TD Scholarship for Community Leadership winners — both past and present — to take part in an exclusive conference in Toronto that focuses on finding solutions to educational barriers in Canada.â€

2010 Ukrainian Cultural Festival in Mission, BC this Saturday
The 15th Annual B.C. Ukrainian Cultural Festival is happening in Mission, B.C. this Saturday.

Clarke Theatre at the Heritage Park Secondary School - 33700 Prentis Street, Mission, BC
Our festival includes a dance and music competition, various displays of Ukrainian arts and crafts including embroidery, pysanka, wheat weaving as well as information on tours to Ukraine or tracing one’s genealogy, Ukrainian language classes and more. Each year we feature a special display or exhibit relating to Ukrainian culture and heritage.
Of course, no festival is complete without food! A very busy kitchen runs throughout the day.

Welcome to Veselka, Foam Lake’s commemoration of so many of the pioneers who founded and developed our province and our community. Veselka is the largest Ukrainian Festival in rural Saskatchewan. This year will be the 15th annual Festival of great entertainment and great food. In the upper level of the hall, displays will be set up to meet your Ukrainian purchasing needs.
